Maryland Alcohol Tax in Place

Remember that new law that would allow you to import wine from other states? This fairly common sense legislation was held up by the drunks at MADD who figured that children would be purchasing $75 bottles of premium wines from Napa Valley over the Internet so that they could drink it and get drunk.

I don't know about you, but when I was under 21, we just paid people to go to the liquor store to buy it for us. And I'm taking about the good stuff - Bartel's and James wine coolers, Miller Genuine Draft, Boone's Farm, etc... So either kids are really really stupid these days or organizations in favor of banning Internet alcohol sales are delirious.

So what when hand-in-hand with that law that allowed us to buy wines from California that we could not previously purchase? An alcohol tax, of course. As former Governor Bob Ehrlich correctly predicted, Martin O'Malley was going to use his second term in office to push through massive tax increases all over the place that would disproportionately hurt poor and working class families, but apparently Maryland voters as a whole don't give a tiger poop about the poor and working class families, because they reelected this joker.

So this past week the new alcohol tax went into place. Expect to pay more at the liquor store and more at the bar. O'Malley says this money is going to be used to pay for healthcare. Yeah, and the transportation fund was supposed to be used to build roads and bridges, and we all know that money was used to balance the budget deficit resulting from his out-of-control spending.

So what was my reaction to this new law taxing my booze? I went out and bought a bunch of bottles the day before the new tax went into effect saving myself some cash, which I then spent in Pennsylvania (aka Pennsyltucky). What did you do the day before this new tax went into effect?
